Branding

viral blog posts

“There is nothing new under the sun…. Just give your reader something to talk about.”

Save yourself some TIME and EFFORT

One of the worst mistake you can make as a writer is to believe everything you do has to be original. You can’t afford to spend months or years dreaming up a daring new approach for everything you write. A better way is to watch what is and has been working for everyone else and then creatively adapt it for your own purposes.

True genius is clothed in the ideas of others

There is nothing new under the sun. The author of The Holy Bible did not write anything you; they simply stole the plots of previous generations and cultures and adapted them to their own needs and reality. Shakespeare, to make it big, did not start from scratch; he simply spent a lot of time adapting and rewriting the content from the ancient Greek and Roman plays. Even Thomas has to plead guilty; he practically plagiarized the Declaration of Independence from John Locke.

More than often, the key to great writing is blatant and unrepentant theft; the best writers are often the best thieves.

None of those irresistible headlines you may see on the covers of the greatest magazines are new. The same is to be said about all of these blog posts that go viral. If you look carefully at any great headline, you can distill it down to some “Fill in The Blanks” templates that works for almost every topic you want to write about, whatever your niche and audience.

There is nothing new under the sun

Deal with the complexity of life looking at the headlines and great papers that have worked time and time again for some of the most popular authors and publications in the world.

Carefully consider what you read. There is nothing new under the sun. Everything has been said and written. While reading, consider every theme that is being exploited, stop at every headline and write down a few that you can adapt and use to suit your own needs either in your blogs, articles or book.

You want to go VIRAL?

You want to go viral, pay specific attention to one of the most successful headlines ever, the “Granddaddy of All Headlines”, the “HOW TO” headline that has been used for almost 100 years.

Why is that headline so powerful?

Only because most readers are naturally biased toward articles that help them do something. Ideas and opinions are great, but for most people, they have no lasting practical value. To really get their attention, they need an expert to show them how to apply those ideas in a practical way that applies to their specific situation.

This should be the premise, the foundation of all your writing.

If you are successful in teaching people useful, something that can save them TIME and MONEY, people will not resist reading you, clicking and buying your books.

Most people are not just interested in “WHAT TO DO”; they are also concerned with “WHAT TO BE” and “HOW TO BE” what they want to be. Most people are interested in reading about anything about HOW TO transform themselves in almost any way they can imagine and struggling to become.

By figuring out which traits your audience most desires and then putting them into your headlines, you will harness this natural curiosity people have in transforming themselves into something more, into something they are not, into something they aspire to become.

Most people do not want to settle for just being good. Most people aspire to be, to become the very best at what they do. They want to dominate their area of expertise. By recognizing this inherent desire of most people to “STAND OUT”, in every one of your headlines, they quickly move from a simple promise of help to an irresistible lure, especially if your headline is written in the form of a “LIST-BASED HEADLINE”.

Lists based headlines are a highly efficient way to organize the information you want to disseminate. People know exactly what they are getting into before starting reading and clicking. It is all about perception. A list based headline is approachable and nonthreatening.

Subconsciously, most people have this natural tendency to believe that most of the ideas or hints of an article will not work for them; but none of these people cannot resist the idea that maybe they may or will find one idea that will. The more ideas your article offers, the better the chance for them to find one that applies specifically to their situation.

Give your reader something to talk about

You want people to read your blog posts, your articles?

You need to make the readers curious. You need to use these power words and easy sounding list based headlines that will motivate the reader into checking out your blog post, your article or book.

Your headline shall be designed to harness the curiosity of the reader that is already there. Your blog, article or book shall give the reader something to talk about. It shall reflect the promise to satisfy their curiosity as well as give them something interesting to talk about.

Your blog, article or book shall offer comfort and reassurance. Especially when times are tough, people like to be confirmed in their opinion and, the prospect of spending time reading someone who understand their situation and offer some relief is strongly appealing.

Not belonging or feeling a part of something bigger than themselves is one of all people greatest fears. No one wants to be or stand alone. While opinions may be plentiful, it is always very difficult to resist a headline that presents an interesting take on a topic you care about.

Readers who will agree with you will click to validate their own ideas. The more skeptical readers will click and read your blog, article or book to find out if there is any weight in your claim. The more controversial or shocking your viewpoint or idea, the more people will want to find out whether you can make it stick.

Write to solve your reader’s problems, not yours

Most people these days are busy and when problems come along, they want to solve them as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Sometimes it is a problem you already know something or everything you know about. Other times people will raise problems you and many others like you are or were not aware of. Either way, offer your readers a fix to put this or these problems behind them, so they can get on with their day.

Any fix that will provide people with more TIME and save or make them MONEY is a winner. No one can resist such a headline that promises such results, and offer them a fix in the same breath. People will bookmark your blog post, they tell their friends about it, and retweet it and you can get traffic from it for years.

Write a great headline and “GO VIRAL”

You could write a post every day for a year and not even come close to exhausting all the possibilities of writing a great headline. Sometimes, the difference between a good headline and a great headline is only a well-chosen word dropped in exactly the right place.

Just add a little interest in your headline by simply adding a power word to your title, power words, powerful adjectives that will add strong emotions to your heading, emotions like anger, excitement, disgust and desire, thereby setting it apart from those that have come before.

more-email-subscribers

Bunkumless.com: The best thing since the invention of the time machine

Since 2012, I have personally typed and carefully went through every single email I sent. I sent thousands of emails, resulting in an 18% sent-to-publication success rate. There was and there is still no miracles here, only painful experiences, hard work. blood, sweat and tears.

During my first few weeks I made sure to carefully note every email I sent, every response I received and whether it led to a successful new acquisition or not. For every five emails I sent, I would get one new subscription.

Over the next year and a half, I would continue sending about five hundred emails a week that, resulted in 150,000 visits to my client’s blogs and websites. The conversion rate averaging 40%, this eventually led to a total of 60,000 new subscribers.

You want to achieve the same results?

There are two options:

Option 1: You click here to hire me;

Option 2: You do your homework.

You decided to do your homework!

This is a full-time job and here is what you need to do to drive thousands of signups for your business:

  1. Do your research

Before ever sending out your first emails or answering any emails you may receive, you need to research the people, the persons you are talking or want to talk to:

Google their name; read their work online; bookmark some of their great pieces of work; scroll through their social profiles; learn about what makes them tick, what annoy them or makes them angry; check their political affiliation, how they feel about important social topics and their opinions on the subjects.

This research will help you learn what they are interested in and what they are most likely to notice in a conversation. Use this information wisely and in a timely manner. This being done, look to attract media attention.

  1. Make yourself familiar

You are now ready to procced with your first email campaign. There is a reason why it is called “Cold Email”. It is your first contact with people who know little or nothing about you. Unfortunately, people tend to like places, things and people they are familiar with and ignore unfamiliar people and novelties.

Before sending an email, make sure to devise a way to get your contact to remember your name or the name of your product or service. Before sending your emails, follow your prospective contacts on social media. Try interacting with them and see how it goes. Contact them after a big change or success in their life. A quick “congrats” or “Happy Birthday” will go a long way.

  1. Personalize your emails

Most people can immediately spot a mass email and are quick to discard it. In your email to strangers and prospective customers or clients, make sure you mention their name, their product/service or the name of their company. Write and tell them about why they are special to you and what made them stand out among many others.

  1. Find something you have in common

Never send an email before finding at least one thing you have in common with the person or the business you are reaching out to. Finding something in common with people you are trying to talk to makes you more likable and familiar to them.

  1. Strike a conversation

People love being asked questions and talk about themselves. Make sure you hit the right topic and they will not be able to resist replying. Whoever you want to talk to, learn enough about these persons to figure out what gets them excited. Strike and make sure to maintain a conversation about it.

  1. Use emotional hooks

Like for “Cold Calls” using “emotional hooks” in a cold emailing takes a few smart adjustments but when done properly, they are incredibly effective and produce amazing results. One of the most basic emotions is “Desire”. If your prospects are truly motivated, if they have “Desire”, if only for one of your products or services, then they will feel connected to you. And the more they desire, the more interesting you and what you have to offer become.

  1. Make it short and simple

The ideal length of a Public Relations or Marketing pitch always has been two to three paragraphs. Apply this simple rule to every cold email you send. Avoid overselling, getting lost in long pitches or overwhelming your reader with too much info. Avoid alienating your readers: go straight to the point.

Think about what you want to say, the message you have to convey. Stay focus. Focus on the main point of your email and edit out all unnecessary parts. Assign a goal to your email and then, to each sentence. This being done, edit out all the sentences that do not support the main goal of your email.

  1. Make your email about them, not you

Focusing on yourself and the points you are trying to bring up, focusing mainly on the benefits of your products or services is a mistake. Your email will not be relevant to anyone, to any person unless you focus on them.

Make your email everything about your contact, your prospective customer, not you. People love to talk and hear about themselves. Use this petty human characteristic against your reader and start with focusing on them and only them.

  1. Check the clock

Before sending any email, double check the time zone of your prospects, of your targeted audience and schedule the release of your emails to reach them while they are at work and still focused enough. 5:00 P.M. is not a good time.

Mornings are best, but not too early. Tend to aim at 11 A.M. deliveries.

If you want them to notice you, be respectful of your prospects’ time and make sure your email is still relevant. The perfect pitch is timely, relevant, personal and intriguing enough to get a conversation started.

  1. Follow up

Follow-ups get 30% higher response rates than first emails.

Make sure to follow up by writing a quick email acknowledging how busy and important your contacts are while politely asking them to consider your email one more time.

One last word

Again, all of this is time consuming and if you don’t have the right tools, this will fast become a full-time job.

If you do not have the time, I can do it for you.

blending

Blend in and nurture the common touch

If you make a show of going against the times, flaunting your unconventional ideas and unorthodox ways, people will think that you only want attention and that you look down upon them. They will find a way to punish you for making them feel inferior. It is far safer to blend in and nurture the common touch. Share your originality only with tolerant friends and those who are sure to appreciate your uniqueness.

It is easy to run into danger by trying to swim against the stream. Disagreement is regarded as offensive because it is a condemnation of the views of others. Truth is for the few, error is as casual as it is vulgar. The wise man avoids being contradicted as sedulously as he avoids contradicting. Thought is free; it cannot and should not be coerced. Retire in the sanctuary of your silence and if you sometimes allow yourself to break it, do so under the aegis of a discreet few. He lives well who conceals himself well.

Wise men are like coffers with double bottoms: Which when others look into being opened, they see not all that they hold. Never combat any man’s opinion; for you would never have done setting him right upon all the absurd things that he believes. Avoid correcting people’s mistakes in conversation, however good your intentions may be; for it is easy to offend people, and difficult, if not impossible to mend them. If you feel irritated by the absurd remarks of whoever you are talking with, just walk away.

Never discuss with the fool

Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under foot and turn to attack you. The herd shuns the black sheep, uncertain whether or not it belongs with them. So it straggles behind, or wanders away from the herd, where it is cornered by wolves and promptly devoured. Stay with the herd, there is safety in numbers. Keep your differences in your thoughts and not in your fleece.

It is inevitable in society that certain values and customs lose contact with their original motives and become oppressive. And there will always be those who rebel against such oppression, harboring ideas far ahead of their time. However, there is no point in making a display of your dangerous ideas if they only bring you suffering and persecution. Martyrdom serves no purpose, better to live onion an oppressive world, even to thrive in it. Meanwhile, find a way to express your ideas subtly for those who understand you. Laying your pearls before swine only bring you trouble.

People who flaunt their infatuation with different values and cultures are expressing a disdain and contempt for their own. They are using the outward appearance of the unknown and the exotic to separate themselves from the common folk who unquestioningly follow the local customs and laws. Their need to show their difference often makes them disliked by the people whose beliefs they challenge. Measure and moderate your desire to show your difference.

Do not renounce your beliefs, disguise their outward appearance

In the face of oppression and persecution, it is foolish to openly and directly express your ideas. In the face of awesome persecution, it is always better to disguise your beliefs and ideas while insinuating them at the same time: You pretend to disagree with dangerous beliefs and ideas, but in the course of your disagreement, you give those beliefs and ideas expression and exposure. You seem to conform to the prevailing orthodoxy, but those who know you will understand the irony involved.

We all tell lies and hide our true feelings, for complete free expression is a social impossibility. From an early age we learn to conceal our thoughts, telling the prickly and insecure what we know they want to hear, watching carefully lest we offend them. For most of us this is natural; there are ideas and values that most people accept, and it is pointless to argue. There are people, however, like me, who see such restraints as an intolerable infringement on their freedom, and who often have the temptation to prove the superiority of their values, ideas and beliefs. In the end, though, their arguments convince only a few and offend a great deal more.

Wise and clever people learn early on that they can display conventional behavior and mouth conventional ideas without having to believe in them. The power you gain from blending in is that of being left alone to have the thoughts you want to have, and to express them to the people you want to express them to, without suffering isolation or ostracism. Once you have established yourself in a position of power, you can, then, try to convince a wider circle of the correctness of your ideas.

Play the clever fox, be all things to all people

In society, outward appearances are what matter. Make a show of blending in, even going so far as to be the most zealous advocate of the prevailing orthodoxy. If you stick to conventional appearances in public, few will believe you think differently in private. Your outward conformity will give you the freedom to work unhindered, without having to change your thinking. Not only do people of power avoid the offences, they also learn to play the clever fox and feign the common touch.

You want to achieve success and power! Re-invent yourself, re-create yourself: Overcome your natural aristocratic stance to cultivate a familiarity with the common man; express your familiarity in little gestures, often symbolic, to show the people that you share popular values, despite your different status, values and ideas. When you go in society, leave behind your own ideas and values, and put on the mask that is most appropriate for the group in which you find yourself. People will swallow the bait because it flatters them to believe that you share their ideas.

Understand this: The only time it is worth standing out is when you already stand out, when you have achieved an unshakable position of power and you no longer have to observe the protocols and niceties of others. Whatever you do, remember: The truth is that, even when you attain the heights of success and power, you would, often, be better off at least affecting the common touch, for at some point you may need popular support.

Finally, there is always a place in this world for the gadfly, the person who successfully defies custom and mocks what has grown lifeless in culture. One may achieve considerable social power in making it clear that he disdains the usual ways of doing things. Just be careful: Even if your audience, people are expecting you to insult them and welcome it, this is still a dangerous game; without the ability to amuse and delight, your barbs will simply offend people and possibly destroy you.

Create compelling spectacles

When re-creating yourself, re-inventing yourself, create compelling spectacles, striking imagery and grand symbolic gestures to create this aura of power to which everyone will respond. Stage spectacles, full of arresting visuals and radiant symbols that will heighten your presence for those around you. Dazzled by appearances, no one will notice what you are really doing.

Human nature is such that people do not always want words, or rational explanations, or demonstrations of the powers of science; they want an immediate appeal to their emotions. Give them that and they will do the rest. The simpler the spectacle the better. Understand and remember this: Your search for success and power depends on shortcuts. You must always circumvent people’s suspicions, their perverse desire to resist your will.

Images are an extremely effective shortcut: Bypassing the head, the seat of doubt and resistance, they aim straight for the heart. Overwhelming the eyes, they, they create powerful associations, bringing people together and stirring their emotions. Symbols and images, like colors, are very potent weapons.

Weave visual clues into an encompassing gestalt to establish a trademark that will set you apart. Then, take the game further: Find an image or symbol from the past that will neatly fit your situation, and put it on your shoulders. It will make you seem larger than life.

Short-circuit the labyrinth of words

Using words to lead your case is risky business: Words are dangerous instruments, and often go astray. The words people use to persuade us virtually invite us to reflect on them with words of our own; we null them over, and often end up believing the opposite of what they say. It also happens that words offend us, stirring up associations unintended by the speaker. The visual, on the other hand, short-circuits the labyrinth of words. It strikes with an emotional power and immediacy that leave no gaps for reflection and doubt. It leaps right over rational, reasonable thoughts.

Understand this: Words put you on the defensive. If you have to explain yourself your power is already in question. The image, on the other hand, imposes itself as given. It discourages questions, creates forceful associations, resists unintended interpretations, communicates instantly, and forges bonds that transcend social differences. Words stir up arguments and divisions; images bring people together. They are the quintessential instruments of success and power.

The symbol has the same force, whether it is visual or a verbal description of something visual. The symbolic object stands for something else, something abstract. The abstract concept, patriotism, courage, love, is full of emotional and powerful associations. The symbol is a shortcut of expression, containing dozens of meanings in one simple phrase or object. The symbol contains untold power.

Never neglect the way you arrange things visually

The first step in using symbols and images is to understand the primacy of sight among the senses. In the past, it has been argued, sight and the other senses operated on a relatively equal plane. Today, the visual has come to dominate the others, and is the sense we most depend on and trust.

Never neglect the way you arrange things visually. Factors like color, have enormous symbolic resonance. The visual contains great emotional power. Find and associate yourself with the images and symbols that will communicate in this immediate way today, and you will have untold power.

Most effective of all is a new combination, a fusion of images and symbols that have not been seen together before, but that through their association clearly demonstrate your new idea or message. The creation of new images and symbols out of old ones in this way has a poetic effect; viewers’ associations run rampant, giving them a sense of participation.

Visual images often appear in sequence, and the order in which they appear creates a symbol. The first to appear symbolizes power; the image at the center seems to have central importance. The idea is to give yourself an aura, a stature that your normal banal appearance simply will not create.

The best way to use images and symbols is to organize them into a grand spectacle that awes people and distracts them from unpleasant realities. This is easy to do: People love what is grand, spectacular, and larger than life. Appeal to their emotions and they will flock to your spectacle in hordes. The visual is the easiest route to their hearts.

People are always impressed by the superficial appearance of things.

act-like-a-king

Act like a king to be treated like one, be royal in your own fashion

The way you carry yourself often determine how you are treated: In the long run, appearing vulgar or common will make people disrespect you. By acting regally and confident of your powers, you make yourself seem destined to wear a crown. Whatever you do, be royal in your own fashion: Act like a king to be treated like one.

Never lose your self-respect, nor be too familiar with yourself when you are alone. Let your integrity itself be your own standard of rectitude, and be more indebted to the severity of your own judgement of your own judgement of yourself than to all external precepts. Desist from unseemly conduct, rather out of respect for your own virtue than for the structures of external authority. Come to hold yourself in awe.

Never show doubt, never lose your dignity beneath the crown, or it will not fit. It will seem to be destined for one more worthy. Do not wait for a coronation; the greatest emperors crown themselves.

Everyone should be royal after his own fashion. Let your actions, even though they are not those of a king, be, in their own sphere, worthy of one. Be sublime in your deeds, lofty in your thoughts; and in all your doings show that you deserve to be a king.

Be royal in your own fashion

Today, even though we tend toward a world without kings and queens, without omnipotent rulers, the dynamics of power, since the beginning of humanity, never changed. Powerful people may be tempted to affect a common-man aura, trying to create the illusion that they and their subjects or underlings are basically the same, but the people whom this false gesture is intended to impress will quickly see through it. They understand that they are not being given more power, that it only appears as if they shared in the powerful person’s fate.

The only kind of common touch that works is the kind where the powerful shares the values and goals with the common people while remaining a patrician at heart and never pretending to erase his distance from the crowd. Leaders who try to dissolve that distance through a false chumminess gradually lose the ability to inspire loyalty, fear, or love. Instead, they elicit contempt. They end up uninspiring and vanishing in the night, as if they were never there.

Know how to sell yourself

In re-inventing yourself, always act as if you are descending from royal stock. If necessary, create the myth of your noble background. Fabricate a great story and learn to say it well. By asking for the moon, you will instantly raise your own status. Even though you know almost nothing about what you are preaching or selling, even though you have no qualifications for the journey you propose, and your petitions include no details as to how you will accomplish your plans, just vague promises, if you show and display enough boldness, nobody will ever question your background or credentials and the legitimacy of your requests or propositions.

Never back down

If you have to, bullshit your way to the end. The key in re-inventing and re-creating yourself is to know how to sell one self and to stick to the art. Understand this: It is within your power to set your own price. How you carry yourself reflects what you think of yourself. If you ask for little, shuffle your feet and lower your head, people will assume this reflects your character. Present buoyancy, confidence, nobility, self-assurance, and the feeling that you are worthy to wear a crown, and people will respect and admire you.

The Strategy of the Crown

As children, we all start our lives with great exuberance, expecting and demanding everything from the world. But as we grow older, the rebuffs and failures we experience set up boundaries that only get firmer with time. Coming to expect less from the world, we accept limitations that are really self-imposed. We start to bow and scape and apologize for even the simplest of requests. The solution to such a shrinking of horizons is to deliberately force ourselves in the opposite direction, to downplay the failures and ignore the limitations, to make ourselves demand and expect as much as the child.

The “Strategy of the Crown” is based on a simple chain of cause and effect: If we believe we are destined for great things, our belief will radiate outward, just as a crown creates an aura around a king. This outward radiance will infect the people around us, who will think we must have reasons to feel so confident. People who wear crowns seems to feel no inner sense of the limits to what they can ask for or what they can accomplish. This too radiates outward. Limits and boundaries disappear.

Use the Strategy of the Crown and you will be surprised how often it bears fruits. Take as an example those happy children who ask for whatever they want, and get it. Their high expectations are their charm. Adults enjoy granting their wishes. Throughout history, people of undistinguished birth, people like Moses, Jesus, Columbus, Beethoven, Disraeli, Jobs, Zuckerberg, J.K Rowling, believing so firmly in in their own greatness that it became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The trick is simple: Be overcome by your self-belief. Even while you know you are practicing a kind of deception on yourself, act like a king. You are likely to be treated like one.

The crown may separate you from other people, but it is up to you to make that separation real: You have to act differently, demonstrating your distance from those around you. One way to emphasize your difference is to always act with dignity, no matter the circumstance.

Regal bearing is not arrogance

Regal bearing should not be confused with arrogance. Arrogance may seem the king’s entitlement, but in fact it betrays insecurity. It is the very opposite of a royal demeanor. On the other hand, grace under fire, patience, calm and self-assurance always fascinate. Dignity, in fact is invariably the mask to assume under difficult circumstances: It has if nothing can affect you, and you have all the time in the world to respond. This is an extremely powerful pose.

To reinforce the inner psychological tricks involved in projecting a royal demeanor, there are outward strategies to help you create the effect. First, the Bold Strategy: Always make a bold demand. Set your price high and never waver. Second, in a dignified way, always go after the highest person in the building. This immediately puts you in the same plane as the person or the executive you are challenging or attacking. This is the David and Goliath Strategy: By choosing a great opponent, you create the appearance of greatness.

Third, give a gift of some sort to those above you. This is the strategy of those of you who have a patron: By giving your patron a gift, you are essentially saying that the two of you are equal. It is the old con game of giving so you can take. Accepting the gift creates a kind of equality between your patron and yourself. The Gift Strategy is subtle and brilliant because you do not beg: You ask for help in a dignified way that implies equality between two people, one of whom just happens to have more money.

It is up to you to set your own price

Understand and remember: It is always up to you to set your own price. Ask for less and that is just what you will get. Ask for more, however, and you send a signal that you are worth a king’s ransom. Even those who turn you down respect you for your confidence, and that respect will eventually pay off in ways you cannot imagine.

The idea behind the assumption of regal confidence is to set yourself apart from other people, but be careful: If you take this too far, this may well be your undoing. Never make the mistake of thinking that you elevate yourself by humiliating people. Also, it is never a good idea to loom too high above the crowd, you make an easy target. And there are also times when an aristocratic pose is eminently dangerous. Understand this: What you want to do is to radiate confidence, not arrogance or disdain.

Finally, it is true that you can sometimes find some power through affecting a kind of earthy vulgarity, which will prove amusing by its extremeness. But to the extent that you win this game by going beyond the limits, separating yourself from other people by appearing even more vulgar than they are, the game is dangerous: There will always be people more vulgar than you, and you will easily be replaced the following season by someone younger and worse.

Again, remember: What you want to do is to radiate confidence, not arrogance or disdain.

reputation

In today’s world, everything is judge by its appearance.

While creating your new public image, and establishing your reputation, what you want to do is to court attention at all cost. In today’s world, everything is judge by its appearance; what is unseen counts for nothing. You have to draw attention to yourself by creating an unforgettable, even controversial image when appropriate.

Court scandal when necessary. Do anything to make yourself seem larger than life. Make no distinction between kinds of attention, notoriety of any sort will bring you power. Better to be slandered than ignored.

Never let yourself get lost in the crowd. Stand out. Make yourself a magnet of attention by appearing larger, more colourful, more mysterious than the bland and timid masses.

All you need to ensure success is notoriety.

Understand the fundamental truth about attracting attention: Once people’s eyes are on you, you have a special legitimacy.

Creating interest means creating a crowd; every crowd has a silver lining. And crowds tend to act in conjunction. If one person stops to see you beggarman laying bricks in the street, more will do the same. They will gather like dust bunnies. Then, given a gentle push, they will come to you and watch your show.

To create a crowd, you have to do something different and odd. Any kind of curiosity will serve the purpose, for crowds are magnetically attracted by the unusual and inexplicable. And once you have their attention, never let it go. If it veers toward other people, it does so at your own expense. At the beginning of your rise to the top, spend all your energy on attracting attention. And, most important, the quality of the attention is irrelevant. Like they say: Bad publicity is better than no publicity”. No matter how badly you are criticized, or how slanderously personal are the attacks, never complain. Attention, whether negative or positive, is one of the main ingredient of success. The worst fate in the world for anyone who yearns fame, and, of course, power is to be ignored.

Burning more brightly than those around you is a skill that no one is born with. You have to learn to attract attention. At the start of your career, when re-creating and re-inventing yourself, you must attach your name and reputation to a quality, an image, that sets you apart from other people. This image can be something like a characteristic style of dress, or a personality peculiarity that amuses people and gets talked about you. Once the image is established, you have an appearance, a place in the sky for your star.

Court controversy, even scandal

Today, it is a common mistake to imagine that this particular appearance of yours should not be controversial, that to be attacked or slandered is somehow bad. Nothing could be further from the truth. To avoid being a flash in the pan, and having your notoriety eclipsed by another, you must not discriminate between different types of attention; in the end, every kind of attention will work in your favor. Society craves larger-than-life figures, people who stand above the general mediocrity.

Never be afraid of the qualities that set you apart and draw attention to you. When useful or necessary, do not hesitate to court controversy, even scandal. It is better to be attacked, even slandered, then ignored. All livings are ruled by this law, and all professionals must have a bit of showman about them. Welcome personal attacks and feel no need to defend yourself; just make sure, however, whatever you do, to maintain your good reputation as an honest person. This being said, if you find yourself in a lowly position that offers little opportunity for you to draw attention, an effective strategic move is to attack the most visible, most powerful person you can find. Remember, however, to use such tactics sparingly after you have the public’s attention, when the act can wear thin.

Adapt to the changing times

Once in the limelight you must constantly renew it by adapting and varying your method of courting attention. If you don’t, your audience will grow tired, will take you for granted, and will move on to a new star. Never allow yourself to fade into the background.

Maintaining attention requires constant vigilance and creativity. If and when your name becomes too attached to a particular style or brand, deliberately upset your audience with a new sequence of actions that will go against all expectations. Understand this: People feel superior to the person whose actions they can predict. If you show them who is in control by playing against their expectations, you both gain their respect and tighten your hold on their fleeting attention.

Better to create something ugly and disturbing than to let your audience grow too familiar with your work. Always act in mysterious ways. There is room only for one actor at a time in the limelight’s narrow beam; do whatever it takes to make yourself its focus. Be ostentatious and be seen; what is not seen is as though it did not exist.

Create an air of mystery

In a world growing increasingly banal and familiar, what seems enigmatic instantly draw attention. Never make it too clear what you are doing or about to do; never not reveal all your cards. An air of mystery heightens your presence by creating anticipation; everyone is watching you to see what will happen next. The mysterious cannot be grasped, and what cannot be seized and consumed creates power.

Do not imagine that to create an air of mystery you have to be grand and awe-inspiring; mystery that is woven into your day-to-day demeanor, and is subtle, has that much more power to fascinate and attract attention. Understand this: Most people are upfront, can be read like an open book, take little care to control their word or image, and are hopelessly predictable. By simply holding back, keeping silent, occasionally uttering ambiguous phrases, deliberately appearing inconsistent, and acting odd in the subtlest of ways, you will emanate an aura of mystery. The people around you will then magnify that aura by constantly trying to interpret you.

If you do not declare yourself immediately, you arouse expectation. Mix a little mystery with everything, and the very mystery stirs up veneration. And when you explain, be not too explicit. An air of mystery can make the mediocre appear intelligent and profound.

If your social position prevents you from completely wrapping your actions in mystery, you must at least learn to make yourself less obvious. Every now and then, act in a way that does not mesh with other people’s perception of you. This way you keep those around you on the defensive, eliciting the kind of attention that makes you powerful.

Never offend or challenge the reputation of those above you

In the beginning of your rise to the top, you must attract attention at all cost, but as you rise higher you must constantly adapt. Never wear the public out with the same approach. An air of mystery works wonders when you need to develop an aura of power and get yourself noticed, but it must seem measured and under control. Do not let your air of mystery be slowly transformed into a reputation for deceit. The mystery you create must seem a game, playful and nonthreatening. Recognize when it goes too far, and pull back.

There are times when the need for attention must be deferred, and when scandal and notoriety are the last things you want to create. The attention you attract must never offend or challenge the reputation of those above you, not, at any rate, if they are secure. You will see not only paltry but desperate by comparison. There is an art to knowing when to draw notice and when to withdraw.

Never appear overly greedy for attention, then, for it signals insecurity, and insecurity drives power away. Understand that there are times when it is not in your best interest to be the center of attention. When in the presence of the powerful and mighty, a king or a queen, or the equivalent thereof, bow and retreat to the shadows; never compete.

A good reputation is critical, maintain and guard your reputation with your life

Now, that you have decided to kill the excuses and to give yourself or your business a powerful new image, remember this: Reputation, especially one of honesty, is the cornerstone of power. So much depends on reputation that you have to maintain it and guard it with your life. Through reputation alone, you can intimidate any enemy or rival and win all of your fights; let it slips, you will find yourself vulnerable, and attacked on all sides.

Make your reputation unassailable

Always be alert to potential attacks on your reputation and prevent them before they happen. Learn to destroy your enemies by opening holes in their own reputations. Then, stand aside and let public opinion hang them.

Understand this: Doubt is a powerful weapon. Once you let it out of the bag with insidious rumors, your opponents are in a horrible dilemma. They can deny the rumors, even prove that you have slandered them, but a layer of suspicion will always remain: Why are they defending themselves so desperately? Maybe the rumor has some truth to it? If, on the other hand, they take the high road and ignore you, the doubts, unrefuted, will be even stronger.

If done correctly, the sowing of rumors can so infuriate and unsettle your rivals that in defending themselves they will make numerous mistakes. This is the perfect weapon if you have no reputation of your own to work from or if you are just starting to build yourself a new one.

After building and establishing a reputation of your own, if you are still under attack, if your rivals or enemies are still barking, it is now time to use a second, gentler tactic, “the fake hypnotism demonstration”: You ridicule your rivals’ reputation. Once you have acquired a solid base of respect, ridiculing your opponents both puts them on the defensive and draws more attention to you, thereby enhancing your own reputation.

Reputation as a power like magic

In the social realm, appearances are the barometer of almost all of our judgements. and never be misled in believing otherwise.

One false slip, one awkward or sudden change in your appearance, can prove disastrous. This is the reason for the supreme importance of making and maintaining a reputation that is of your own creation. Your reputation will protect you in the dangerous game of appearances, distracting the probing eyes of others from knowing what you are really like, and giving you a degree of control over how the world judges you.

Reputation as a power like magic: with one stroke of its wand, it can double your strength. It can also send people scurrying away from you. Whether the exact same deeds appear brilliant or dreadful and depend entirely of the reputation of the doer.

At first, when reinventing yourself, you must work to establish a reputation for one single outstanding quality, whether generosity, honesty or even cunning. This quality will set you apart and get people to talk about you. Then, make your reputation known to as many people as possible, and watch it spreads like wild fire.

A solid reputation increases your presence and exaggerates your strengths without having you to spend much energy. A solid reputation can also create an aura around you that will install respect, even fear. As they say, your reputation inevitably precedes you, and if it inspires respect, a lot of your work is done for you before you arrive on the scene, or utter a single word. Make your reputation simple and base it on one sterling quality. This single quality, efficiency, say, or seductiveness, becomes a kind of calling card that announces your presence and places others under a spell.

Guard your reputation with your life

When you are first establishing it, a good reputation, especially one of honesty, is a treasure to be carefully collected and hoarded. You must strictly protect it, and anticipating all possible attacks from your rivals and enemies becomes your main priority. Once your reputation is solid, just make sure not let yourself get angry or defensive at any slanderous comments of your rivals or enemies; that would only reveal insecurity, not confidence in your reputation. Instead, take the high road, and whatever you do, always make sure to never appear desperate in your self-defense.

On the other hand, while displaying confidence by taking the high road, an attack on another man’s reputation is a potent weapon, particularly when you have less power than he does. Such a more powerful rival or enemy has much more to lose in a reputation battle. Your own thus-far-small reputation gives your rivals and enemies a very small target when they try to return the fire. But this tactic must be practiced with skill; you must not seem to engage in petty vengeance. If you do not break your enemy’s reputation cleverly, you will inadvertently ruin your own. Never go too far in attacks like these, for that will draw more attention to your own vengefulness than to the person or business you are slandering. When your own reputation is firmly established, use subtler tactics, such as satire and ridicule, to weaken your opponent while making you out as a charming rogue.

Since we must live in society and must depend on the opinions of others, there is nothing to be gained by neglecting your reputation. Today, whatever you do or intend to do, a good reputation is critical. Appearances are critical and by not caring how you are perceived, you let others decide this for you. Maintain and guard your reputation with your life: Be the master of your own fate.

The only thing standing between you and your preferred future is the bullshit stories you keep telling yourself.

Proteus, the Greek mythological prophetic old man of the sea, knew all things of the past, the present, and the future, but disliked divulging what he knew. Those who wished to consult him had first to surprise and bind him during his noonday slumber. Even when caught he would try to escape by assuming all sort of shapes. But if his captor held him fast, the god at last would return to his proper shape and gave the wished-for answer.

Today, for anyone who intends to make his or her fortune in this world must be like a chameleon susceptible of reflecting the colors of the atmosphere that surrounds him, a Proteus apt to assume every form and every shape. He or she must be supple, flexible, insinuating, close, inscrutable, often base, sometimes sincere, sometimes perfidious, always concealing a part of his or her knowledge, indulging in but one tone of voice, patient, a perfect master of his or her own countenance, as cold as ice when any other man would be all fire; and if, not religious at heart, a very common occurrence for a soul possessing the above requisites, he or she must always have religion on his or her mind, that is to say on his or her face, on his or her lips, and in his or her manners.

The only thing standing between you and your preferred future is the bullshit stories you keep telling yourself as to why you cannot achieve your dreams and goals. Stop blaming everyone else other than yourself for your personal failures or disappointments. You do not have to listen to anyone who tells you how you need to live your life and what you need to own or what you need to do. It is up to you and only you to decide what you want to achieve in life. It is up to you, and only you, to define and to design your preferred future and to achieve it. You are not happy with your life! Seriously consider taking on your responsibilities and stop listening to anyone telling you how to live your life. It is up to you, and nobody else, to design your own life and to achieved your own preferred future.

No matter who you are or what you dream of becoming, remember this: No one ever came to this planet to take a back seat, play second fiddle or make it small.

Being who you want to be is a personal choice

Being successful, being who you want to be is everything about taking on responsibilities or refusing them. Understand this: You do not have to accept the role that society, your family and your environment foisted on you.

You are not happy with your life! Re-create yourself and design your own life like you want it to achieve your own preferred future. All it takes is some faith in yourself, a good plan, and a lot of discipline. Re-create yourself by forging yourself a new identity, one that will command attention and never bore your audience. Have a plan and show some discipline. Show some discipline and stick to your guns.

The moment you realize you have complete responsibility for every aspect of your existence is the exact moment you take control of your life rather than letting events and others define who you are.

Be the master of your public image

Understand this: There is a vital link between power and theater. You want to make your fortune in this world! Make yourself and actor and director on the world stage.

A few years ago, I moved to Manhattan, I wanted to be a writer; working for others was worse than a prison for it left me neither the time nor the freedom to pursue my passion. In Manhattan, so I thought, I would establish my independence and make my living by writing. It did not take very long, however, after my arrival in Manhattan, before I had to confront certain very harsh realities of life: In Manhattan, to have any degree of independence, you need to have money; Very few newcomers in Manhattan ever came close to making a living by writing. In fact, when I first showed my writing to an editor, he told me. “Find yourself a regular job and write as a hobby”. Clearly, I had come to Manhattan to attempt the impossible. And I had no other option than to go back home.

Back in Montreal, forced into a ready-made role, that one of a second-rate writer writing mostly for others, I decided that if I had to play a role, if I had to play that game, I would turn this game around: I would control the options forcing others to play with the cards as was going to deal. It is then that I came up with a strategy to re-invent, to re-create myself completely, forging myself a public image of my own making and never letting my newly created character grow stale or predictable.

For years now, I am playing a part for public consumption. In simply rejecting the limits society, my environment and family had set on me, what I really wanted to achieve was the power to determine my own life, my own character. I did not attain this power, however, by being myself. It would not have been possible. To attain this power, I had to re-create myself, to create a persona that I could constantly adapt to my own desires, a persona that attracted attention and gave me presence.

Understand this: The world wants to assign you a role in life, and once you accept that role you are doomed: Your power is limited to the tiny amount allotted to the role you have been forced and accepted to assume.

Understand this: The world is a theater and an actor plays many roles; you do not have to accept or comply with the limits society, your environment and family had set for you, by assuming all sort of forms and shapes you can you can escape these limits and have a life of your own. Enjoy that protean power, and if it is beyond you, at least forge a new identity, one of your own making, one that has no boundaries assigned to it by an envious and resentful world. This act of defiance is Promethean: It makes you responsible for your own creation.

Your new identity, your new character is what sets you apart and gives you theatrical presence. It is a costume that you can put on and take off at will according to circumstances. Your new identity protects you from the world precisely because this new character is not “you”; you no longer need not to take the critics personally.

When appearing before crowds wear your most spectacular clothing. Be upstaged by no one. Be notoriously vain about your appearance. When speaking before crowds, be a masterful orator. Know how to say a lot by saying a little and when to end a speech for maximum effect. Never fail to incorporate a surprise into each one of your public appearances, a startling announcement that will heighten their drama; immensely popular among the people, you will be hated and feared by your rivals. Learn to say your lines as if they had been scripted. Learn to gesture and move through a crowd with a constant sense on how you appear to your audience. Incorporate surprise into your repertoire, building drama into your speeches, staging into your public appearances. Make your gestures broad enough for the common man to grasp them instantly. Learn to enlarge your actions through dramatic techniques such as: Surprise; suspense; the creation of sympathy, and symbolic identification. Be constantly aware of your audience, of what will please them and what will bore them. Wherever you go, whatever you do, arrange to place yourself at the center, to command attention, and never be upstaged at any cost.

You want to make your fortune in this world! Be the master of your own image Incorporate dramatic devices into your public gestures and actions; your power will be enhanced and your character will seem larger than life. Now, those in the back rows can see and hear you, those in the front rows marvel at your audacity.

Remake yourself into a character of power

Understand this: The character you seem to have been born with is not necessarily who you are; beyond the characteristics you have inherited, your parents, your friends, and your peers have helped to shape your personality and not very often in the right way. The Promethean task of the powerful is to take control of the process, to stop allowing others that ability to limit and mold them. Remake yourself into a character of power. Working on yourself like clay should be one of your greatest and most pleasurable life tasks.

For thousands of years, only kings and the highest courtiers had the freedom to shape their public image and determine their own identity. The rest of mankind played the limited role that society demanded of them, and had little self-consciousness. The first people to other than aristocrats to play openly with their image in Western society were artists and writers, and later on dandies and bohemians. Today the concept of self-creation has slowly filtered down to the rest of society, and has become an ideal to aspire to.

The first step in the process of self-creation is self-consciousness: Being aware of yourself as an actor and taking control of your appearance and emotions. Again, understand and remember this: The bad actor is the one who is always sincere.

People who wear their hearts on their sleeves out in society are tiresome and embarrassing. Their sincerity notwithstanding, it is hard to take them seriously. Those who cry in public may temporarily illicit sympathy, but sympathy soon turns to scorn and irritation at their self-obsessiveness. They cry to get attention, we feel, and a malicious part of us wants to deny them satisfaction. Good actors control themselves better. They can play sincere and heartfelt, can affect a tear and a compassion look at will, but they do not have to feel it. Good actors externalize emotions in a form that others can understand. Method acting is fatal in the real world. No ruler or leader could possibly play the part if all of the emotions he showed had to be real. Learn self-control. Adopt the plasticity of the actor, who can mold his face to the emotion required.

The second step on the process of self-creation is the creation of a memorable character: One that compels attention, that stands out above all other players on the stage. Good drama, however, needs more than an interesting appearance, or a single stand-out moment. Drama takes place over time. It is an unfolding event.

Rhythm and timing are critical, and one of the most important elements in the rhythm of drama is suspense: The key to keeping the audience on the edge of their seats is letting events unfold slowly, then speeding them up at the right moment, according to a pattern and tempo that you control. Learn to orchestrate events in such a manner not to reveal all your cards at once, but unfolding them in a way that heightens their dramatic effect.

Proteus’ power came from his ability to change shape at will, to be whatever the moment required. Know how to be all things to all men. That is the art of winning over everyone. Craft and plan your entrances and exits carefully. Take note of temperaments and adapt yourself to that of each person you meet.
